Remember when Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story came out, and interest in dodgeball spiked? The movie featured jokes about dodgeball being reported on by “OSQ”, or Obscure Sports Quarterly, and events being shown on ESPN 8, “The Ocho.” Well, it turned out that once again truth was stranger then fiction, because numerous people suddenly wanted to play and watch professional dodgeball after the movie’s release. Dodgeball fever seems to have waned a bit since 2004, and honestly I think it’s a shame. So what better way to reignite some interest than to sub out the red rubber balls with spears and rocks? Something tells me that Patches O’Houlihan would approve.
That seems to be exactly what Fun Punch Games aims to do with Strikers Edge, which was revealed during last month’s E3 as “an intense, action-packed, online multiplayer ranged combat game.” Currently, the game is said to feature eight playable characters with unique abilities, local and online multiplayer, and one-on-one and two-on-two modes are planned. I’m looking forward to seeing how this game shapes up, and welcome another local couch game to use an instrument to destroy friendships, face to face. Though honestly devs, I think the option to play with the classic rubber balls should at least be an easter egg. There’s something hilarious about the sound they make bouncing off someone’s face.
